"Gio" Kinkladze Southampton goal
'Gio’ captures Georgi Kinkladze's stunning solo goal against Southampton on the 16th March 1996 at Maine Road.
A wonder goal that many will remember in the 1995/1996 season when there wasn't much to shout about.
Capturing the very essence of his game in one perfect moment. Picking the ball up just inside the Southampton half, Kinkladze weaved past five players before dinking the ball over their goalkeeper Beasant. It was a moment of genius that was one of the best ever goals scored at Maine Road. The season ended with relegation from the Premiership and Kinkladze was sold to Ajax in 1998, but his place in City's folklore was secured.
Writing in the programme for the next game Alan Ball said "Those of you who were at the match will still be savouring like me the goal by Georgi Kinkladze which was without doubt the best I have ever witnessed in my long career.
I will never forget the way he weaved his way past the Southampton defenders before calmly waiting for the goalkeeper to commit himself and then chipping the ball into the net.
That goal was first class, and I cannot stress too strongly the importance of that goal to the club."
The little Georgian maestro was a hit with the Maine Road faithful and blessed with exceptional balance and a sublime left foot. His close control and dribbling skills would leave opponents dizzy as he twisted and danced through their defence.
